Applications are submitted through the UTSA Graduate Application. Please upload all required documents (listed below) on your UTSA Graduate Application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure completion and submission of the application, a nonrefundable application fee, and all required supporting documents are on file with UTSA by the appropriate application deadline.

National Security Studies (Graduate Certificate)
  Required Degree Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
  Minimum GPA 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) Departments may consider GPA of last 60 semester credit hours. Otherwise qualified individuals with a GPA below 3.0 may still be eligible for admission consideration. For further information, please contact [email protected].
  Coursework Completed adequate credit hours or foreign institution equivalent coursework as preparation for the program. Students interested in this program who have previous education in non-business fields are encouraged to apply.
  Transcripts* Required from all institutions attended; international transcripts must be recorded/translated to English
Credential Evaluation Required if you have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions. Submit an evaluation of your transcripts from FCSA or any NACES-approved credential evaluation agency.
  English Language Proficiency 79 TOEFL iBT / 6.5 IELTS / Duolingo 100
For exams taken on or after January 21, 2026: We require a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 4.0.

National Security Studies Requirements

The requirements for this program are at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution. To maintain enrollment in the certificate program, students should maintain a 3.0 grade point average throughout tenure in the program. 

Note: Applicants who are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at UT San Antonio should submit the UT San Antonio Graduate Certificate Form to add a certificate to their current program. Complete and submit the linked form with approved signatures to [email protected].

Tuition for the Graduate Certificate in National Security Studies program is $550 per credit hour. 

All National Security Studies 100% online courses are offered in 16-week terms.

This certificate is ideal for students or professionals who want a targeted, accelerated credential in national security. Upon completing the program, you’ll be able to pursue options such as an Intelligence Analyst, a Foreign Service Officer, a Homeland Security Specialist, a Risk Analyst, a Policy Advisor and more. 

To complete the 100% online Graduate Certificate in National Security Studies, you’ll take three graduate-level courses (9 credit hours). 

Students working towards a graduate certificate are not eligible for financial aid. However, if you would like to include the National Security Studies certificate in your academic plan for master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies, you may be eligible for financial aid 

The prerequisites for this program are at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution. 

You will also need to submit a resume and purpose statement with your application. 

This is a non-thesis certificate program. No thesis or capstone is required.
