UT San Antonio Online’s Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Sustainability has been ranked No. 9 in the nation on GISDegree.org’s 2026 list of Best Online Bachelor’s Degrees in Geography. GISDegree.org is an independent educational resource from Degree Prospects, a group that has produced higher education publications for more than 15 years.
“We’re really excited about our online program because it combines both the important elements of geography with environmental sustainability, which will equip students with the knowledge and tools to really put geography into action,” said Dr. Neil Debbage, Associate Professor and Coordinator of UT San Antonio’s Geography and Environmental Sustainability program.
The rankings focus on a key question: Which online geography programs offer a strong return on investment? The organization looked at factors that matter to working adults – program reputation, overall affordability and long‑term career value.
As part of their review, the organization evaluated UT San Antonio Online’s reputation among employers and analyzed the total cost of completing the degree. While some universities on the list charge different tuition rates for in‑state and out‑of‑state students, UT San Antonio Online offers a flat-rate tuition per credit hour for all students, no matter where they live.
GISDegree.org also noted UT San Antonio’s SACSCOC accreditation as a marker of academic quality, along with key focus areas in the program such as GIS, spatial analysis and the signature experience capstone.
The ranking pointed out that UT San Antonio Online students can learn to use industry‑relevant GIS tools. UT San Antonio teaches students to use ArcGIS Pro, a tool widely regarded as the industry standard for professional GIS work. Not every online geography program includes ArcGIS Pro in its curriculum, making this a meaningful advantage for students who want careers in GIS or geography related fields.

The reviewers also noted that, due to the university’s location, UT San Antonio offers opportunities to explore real-world challenges in urban development, migration, resource management and more. These issues are especially relevant for students who want to apply geography skills in ways that directly shape communities and solve practical problems.
“Geography is a really broad discipline and we try to cover all of the elements in our online program,” added Debbage. “It’s really great for students who care about their environment and want to make not just their environment but the entire world a much better and sustainable place to live.”
