VA Benefits for Online Students
GI Benefits
The UTSA Veterans Certification Office helps students who wish to use their GI Bill ® or Post 9/11 Bill. Most federal veteran benefits do not count against offered aid. Non-educational veteran benefits such as Disability, Death and Indemnity Compensation, and VA allowances are accounted for you on Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) under the untaxed income section.
The Montgomery GI Bill ®, or Chapter 30, program provides up to 36 months of veteran’s education benefits within the 10 years following release from active duty. For basic eligibility, a veteran must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent and must have been honorably discharged. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs at UTSA. Remedial and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. The Texas Veterans Commission and UTSA Veterans Certification Office can provide additional information and forms related to the GI Bill ®.
The Post 9/11 GI Bill ®, or Chapter 33, provides tuition assistance for veterans who have at least 90 days of service on or after September 11, 2001, or who were honorably discharged with a service-related disability after 30 days. The benefit provides assistance for up to 36 months within the 15 years proceeding discharge from active duty. The Texas Veterans Commission and UTSA Veterans Certification Office can provide additional information and forms related to the Post 9/11 GI Bill ®.
