Balancing Family and Education
In Spring 2022, Iris Gutierrez proudly watched one of her four daughters, Ariela, become the first in their family to earn a college degree, graduating from St. Philip’s College. As a teen mom, Iris had always prioritized her four daughters’ success over her own aspirations but seeing them thrive inspired her to return to school and pursue her dreams. By Spring 2023, Iris had earned her associate of arts degree from San Antonio College and joined Ariela in applying to UTSA.
Now preparing to cross the commencement stage with a B.A. in Communication, Iris says her journey with the university strengthened her family bond and opened a new chapter of growth and faith-centered achievement, creating a legacy of resilience and inspiration for her daughters.
Q: What inspired you to return to school?
My decision to return to school was deeply rooted in both personal and professional motivations, with a clear desire to become a youth pastor and use my skills on the pulpit to inspire others.
I felt called to further my education, particularly in communication, as it plays a central role in my ministry and my desire to mentor the next generation. As the world becomes increasingly digital, I recognized the importance of developing versatile communication skills that allow me to connect effectively with diverse audiences, especially youth, through digital platforms.
Q: How did returning to school impact your family?
A major source of inspiration for returning to school was the opportunity to attend alongside my daughter, Ariela Moreno, who began pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Biology the same year. Sharing this journey with her has been incredibly meaningful, as it strengthens our bond and highlights the importance of education as a shared legacy. I also wanted to set an example for my four daughters by demonstrating the value of perseverance and lifelong learning, showing them that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.
Q: What influenced your decision to enroll in a fully online degree program?
I chose UTSA Online because it offers the flexibility I needed to balance my studies while raising my children and staying active in my ministry. The online format has enabled me to engage deeply with coursework without sacrificing the time I dedicate to my family. UTSA’s strong reputation for academic excellence and its supportive learning environment were also key factors in my decision, making it the perfect fit for my personal and professional goals.
What has it been like attending UTSA as an adult learner?
Personally, returning to school later in life has been a rewarding and challenging journey. Balancing my daughters’ (Niyah, Isabella, Ariela, Namaste, shown below) needs with the demands of coursework required an immense amount of discipline and sacrifice. There were late nights, early mornings, and moments where I felt stretched too thin. But I knew that each step forward was not only bringing me closer to my academic goals but also showing my daughters the power of persistence and dedication.
Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans,” has been another guiding scripture throughout this journey. This verse reminds me to trust in God’s plan, knowing that with faith and dedication, my path will be made clear. The confidence I’ve gained from my achievements at UTSA has solidified my commitment to my faith, my family and my future career in ministry.
What do you have planned after graduation?
After graduation, I am deeply committed to growing in my calling and serving others through the gifts God has given me. I’ve been accepted into the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (MAPM) program at Oblate School of Theology, where I’ll continue to develop my leadership and spiritual insight.
I look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I’ve gained at UTSA to inspire others, both in ministry and beyond. Whether through public speaking, community leadership, or on the pulpit, my goal is to uplift and serve individuals from all walks of life, offering encouragement and faith-based support.
What’s it like being at UTSA at the same time as your daughter?
It has been incredibly special for us to share this academic journey together. While we are pursuing different fields, the experience of being students at the same institution has brought us closer and created a shared commitment to education and personal growth. UTSA has become an important part of our family’s story, and I’m proud to be building this legacy with her.
