Busy Mom, Summa Cum Laude Graduate

Trejo chose the UTSA Online Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies program for its flexibility and customization, allowing her to tailor her degree to her career goals while maximizing previously earned credits. Living in Laredo, Texas, Elsa needed an institution that allowed her to work on assignments at her own pace.

Elsa graciously responded to our interview request while at her son’s soccer practice. It’s just another example of how she has managed her busy life while earning a degree. Her answers below have been lightly edited for length and clarity.

UTSA Online: What are your plans after graduation?

Elsa Trejo: After graduation, I aim to pursue my master’s in human resources, seeking an entry-level position in HR to gain valuable experience in the field.

How did your first-year experiences influence your later involvement at UTSA?

My first year was a time of adaptation, where I discovered the resources available to me as an online student. Once I became familiar with the program, I felt empowered to be more active and participate in online activities.

What motivated you to get so involved on campus?

I recognized the importance of seizing the opportunities and resources the institution offers to online students, which inspired me to engage more deeply on campus.  Since I don’t live in San Antonio, I could not travel that often to be involved in events at UTSA.

For example, I often visited the UTSA University Career Center to get help building my resume, utilized Handshake for employment connections, and researched my major to ensure I was on the right path.

Are you the first in your family to graduate college?

Yes, and graduating summa cum laude fills me with immense joy and pride.

Who or what has been your biggest support system during your academic journey?

My family, especially my oldest son, who is 14, has been my strongest support. He stepped in whenever I felt overwhelmed, helping care for his younger siblings so I could study or work on special assignments.

What challenges did you overcome during your academic experience?

Throughout my academic journey, I faced significant challenges with my health. Dealing with depression and anxiety tested my resolve. However, my determination to achieve this milestone was stronger than my illness. After seeking professional help, I feel better, and I’m proud that I never quit. Balancing being a full-time mom of three boys and a student was tough, but my family and husband united as a team to support me, making me feel incredibly blessed.

How has your time at UTSA changed you personally or professionally?

My experience at UTSA has transformed me, giving me the confidence to strive for more. Being a mother in my late 30s sometimes led me to believe my role was solely to nurture my children, yet now I see it as a beautiful experience that doesn’t define my entire identity. As graduation with honors approaches, I realize it’s never too late to pursue my dreams. UTSA has given me the tools and knowledge to grow professionally and compete in the job market.

What inspired you to pursue your degree?

I made a promise to my parents before they passed away, especially my father, who had a deep passion for education and career. Despite the many challenges he faced, he always valued learning. I pledged to honor his legacy by pursuing my studies. This journey is not just for me but also to provide for my family, challenge my abilities, and be a symbol of progress for my boys.
