Have you ever seen a smart device recommendation for what to watch next on a streaming platform? Or used a navigation app (like Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps) to avoid traffic? Congratulations! You’ve already experienced Artificial Intelligence (AI) at work. How online education is evolving in the age of AI and automation mirrors these everyday tools, making learning smarter and more flexible.

Online education was already reshaping learning in higher education well before COVID-19. UT San Antonio, for example, has been using fully online programs to change how adults earn degrees for nearly a decade.

Now, AI makes it easier to personalize your learning and support your career-focused growth. This is especially important if you’re balancing work, family and school.

Juggling everything when life moves at such a fast pace can feel overwhelming. That’s where UT San Antonio Online comes into play.

You’ll earn the same degree from the same faculty members as UT San Antonio’s in-person students. But you’ll study from your home. Or the coffee shop down the street. Or anywhere you have the Internet. You’ll have due dates each week, but you get to study around your schedule.

At UT San Antonio Online we focus on access, quality and real‑world impact. AI and automation aren’t replacing your university experience. They’re helping make it more achievable. You can use AI to work smarter, not harder, get support fast and prepare for the future you deserve.

In this blog, we’ll explore the impact of AI on online learning. We’ll examine how you can use AI to create a customized learning pathway.  We’ll also discuss how UT San Antonio Online is adapting to support your goals.

The Impact of AI on the Online Learning Experience

In the past, online courses may have felt static – you watch a lecture, read the material and submit an assignment. Today’s digital classrooms are much more responsive. AI-powered tools work behind the scenes to help make this work more seamlessly for you.

How UT San Antonio Uses AI to Help You

UT San Antonio uses AI in several ways, like in coordination with human enrollment counselors and advisors. The university recently introduced Rowdy AI, a chatbot you can communicate with 24/7 as you explore UT San Antonio and work on your application.

You can call or text Rowdy AI for help with exploring majors, applying or figuring out next steps. You don’t even need an appointment! If you ask about a topic Rowdy AI can’t help you with, it will communicate with the staff members at UT San Antonio so we can reach out to you.

Once enrolled as a UT San Antonio Online student, you’ll have access to RITA, your Roadrunner Intelligent Technology Assistant. You can text RITA about academics, study skills, financial matters and student well-being. RITA is powered by human engagement, so if you need help RITA isn’t able to provide, a team member will reach out to you.

You also have accessible AI tools more readily available to help you study. For example, Zoom (one of UT San Antonio’s video collaboration platform) supports:

  • Automated transcription and captioning for recorded lectures
  • Translation and screen‑reader compatibility
  • AI‑assisted note‑taking and content review

Additionally, you’ll have access to UT San Antonio’s digital learning ecosystem of accessibility tools. A few of these include Ally, ReadSpeaker and Panopto captioning. Whatever your learning style and needs, you’ll find the support you need at UT San Antonio.

Personalized Learning Pathways

At UT San Antonio Online, we want you to have a flexible, personalized learning pathway. Did you know AI can act as a personalized study partner? This doesn’t replace your teachers. It complements those interactions so you can learn in the way that works best for you.

Maybe you already know this, or maybe you’ve never thought to use AI to help you study before. Either way, you’ll appreciate how AI adapts to your learning style.

If permitted by your instructor, you can use UT San Antonio’s Microsoft Copilot 365, which is a generative AI tool. For example, if you struggle with a concept in a cybersecurity or communications course you can ask Copilot to recommend targeted articles, short videos or practice exercises. Of course, you will need to verify its output for accurate information, but it can be a great start in a study session!

Whether you’re in your first semester or close to graduating, personalizing your study using AI can help:

  • Reduce frustration
  • Optimize your time
  • Build confidence

Instead of searching for an answer late at night after a long day, you can spend more time actually learning the material.

24/7 AI Tutoring and Support

Having a personalized tutor to help you is especially useful if you study outside of normal business hours. Whether you’re working on homework early in the morning or late at night, you can use AI to help you study.

You may want your AI to act as a tutor to quiz you. Or, if permitted by your instructor, you may want an AI program, like Grammarly, to proofread your writing before you submit it.

Whether you use it for brainstorming, proofreading, outlining or something else, always follow your course’s syllabus guidelines.

As a UT San Antonio Online student, you’ll have access to strong digital support systems across the university to help navigate academics, technology and services.

We’ve said it before, but AI support does not replace your faculty. It supplements their teaching.

At UT San Antonio Online, your courses are still taught by the same passionate, expert faculty as the in-person students. These world-renowned teachers have industry knowledge and research knowledge to share with you. AI simply helps you engage more fully with that expertise.

Bridging the Skills Gap in an Automated World

AI can automate certain things to help mundane tasks, research and studying faster and simpler.

For example, AI can:

  • Draft emails (don’t forget to proofread and edit before you send!)
  • Provide possible answers to common questions
  • Create a study guide for you to test and then use

If you learn how to work with technology instead of around it, you’ll be one step closer to staying competitive in today’s job market.

That’s why enrolling in a university focused on keeping up with technology, like UT San Antonio, is a great defense against career stagnation.

AI Outside of Technology Industries

AI doesn’t just support technology industries. It also supports fields like:

  • Geography, through data modeling and environmental analysis
  • Communications, through audience insights, media analysis and strategic planning

Why Soft Skills Are More Important Than Ever

Instead of asking if AI will take your job, try reframing the question and ask what you can do that an AI never can.

There’s a growing need for skills that AI can’t replicate, including:

  • Moral reasoning
  • Empathy and emotional intelligence
  • Creativity and vision
